Design and construction of a pilot plant for obtaining biofuel from cultivation of microalgae as a source of renewable energy
Abstract
Given the problems represented by global warming due to greenhouse gases and a very near future in which the world's main oil reserves are depleted, the use of renewable and environmentally friendly energies becomes essential. Thanks to the technological advances we currently have, it is possible to explore new challenges in terms of energy production, which is why research has been considered on the use of microalgae as biomass for the production of bio-oil. These microalgae develop with the consumption of carbon dioxide and certain components of wastewater, helping to mitigate environmental pollution. During the development of the study, to obtain the raw material, the microalgae were grown under autotrophic conditions. The wet concentrate obtained by filtration of the aqueous medium of the microalgae was subjected to a hydrothermal liquefaction process at a pressure of 250 bar and 350 °C to obtain biochar, biogas, organic compounds dissolved in water and bio-oil. It was evident that the increase in pressure has an impact on the quality of the products.
